Menopause Series Part 2 – Weight Gain, how Pilates can help you combat this common Menopausal symptom

Snacking, indulging, comfort eating…call it what you will, but one thing is for sure, you feel the effects a lot more during menopause!

This expansion of the waistline is a commonly cited side-effect of the menopausal transition, so if you are experiencing any menopausal symptoms, you might be noticing it more than usual.

The change in hormones can lead to a woman gaining weight more easily as the body stores more fat and burns calories less efficiently. Eating a balanced diet is important, as is moving more. Pilates is a great calorie burner, especially if you up the intensity and really challenge your endurance. Try holding your plank for longer than you would do normally, or adding another few reps of your ab curl.

In my app, you have the option to add release stretches after each exercise and you can vary the transition time between each exercise. Choose to up the intensity without moving to a more difficult level (which you might be ready for) by deselecting stretches (remember to stretch for yourself at the end) and choose a short transition time. And as Pilates focuses on core strength, you’ll be targeting the area that women most often feel has changed – the waist.

Aesthetics aside, try to place your focus on being fit and healthy and future proofing your mobility. And remember that comparison is the death of joy! Be the best version of yourself.
